So I've been looking at those way nifty Tetris blankets and have decided that I want to make one of my own. In a fit of what I am sure is poor judgement, I've also decided that it would be way cool to make a load of blankets featuring various game sprites and the like, but that's putting the cart before the horse.

Unfortunately, I have very little experience working with granny squares. Where "very little" actually equals "none" ^^; (What have I been working on? Well...)

How do you actually attach granny squares together? Do I just go in with a yarn needle and sew them together, or is there a crochet stitch/technique that does the job? Any granny square patterns y'all would like to suggest/recommend, or should I just resign myself to doing rows?

What are your thoughts on yaoi granny squares?

I love granny squares, they're quick and easy once you get the hang of them, and there's that mini feeling of accomplishment when you've finished one. I've always attached granny squares with a yarn needle and a whip stitch between the loops.

The Purl Bee has a great granny square tutorial with lots of pictures. For some inspiration, this guy made an awesome looking Mario Brothers blanket from crocheted granny squares.

The only way I know to crochet squares (etc) together tends to leave a ridge - if there's a sneaky non-ridge way I'd like to know! So yeah, I tend to sew too.

Tetris blankets are awesome! :D

I use mattress stitch to sew together granny squares; it's more or less invisible and really easy to do.

Hmm; whip stitch would probably work pretty well for some of the stuff I'm considering. I'm not sure if it would give the impression of separating the squares I want for the Tetris blanket, but sounds like it'd be about perfect for something I want to blend more.

Thanks for the tutorial link :) Exactly what I was looking for. Though Ravelry won't let me look at the Mario Brothers blanket without signing up. *grouches*

Hrm; I did some searching and some of these look like they might work? I'm not quite sure how I feel about them, though. While I like the simplicity (er, for a certain value of "simple") of the single-stitch-one-chain-two method, I don't know if it'll give me the look I want. The slip-stitch-through-the-back-loops method seems closer, but I'd worry about it being flimsy, or would just want to go through and stitch the other side for completions' sake. Maybe I'll do a couple of "test" mini-blankets and see what I like best.

They are so awesome! Just have to remember not to let everything line up, or they'll fall apart ;)

Hmm; I don't know if I want invisible for a Tetris blanket, but there's other projects it would definitely be great for.

I'd whip stitch using a thick black thread, so it acts as the thin line of black pixels between squares.
