Anyone know of any series or fanfics out there that involve characters crocheting? I tried the crochet mystery series, but it, uh, didn't click with me, and I have yet to really find any in the world of fanfic.
I'm honestly guilty of knitting fic myself, but only the one time, and I did sneak in a character who crocheted (or the equivalent thereof). I still feel a bit hypocritical, s-sigh.
I dunno, you think there would be any interest in an alternative craft fic/prompt/whatever fest? (With knitting technically also welcome, since I don't want to be too exclusionary, but an emphasis on other crafts.)
It would be nice. The only problem I can think of is the persistent habit non-crocheters have of thinking "all blankets, all the time!" when they think of crocheting.
I don't usually run into the blanket problem, but I don't get a lot of people who even know what crochet is, so. Closest I've come is, when asking about selling some of my stuff at a local arts store, the assumption that it would be scarfs, gloves, hats, things to wear for cooler weather. I had to explain that I actually make adorable stuffed dolls, thank you.
I suppose I could put a series of links at the top: Here's some awesome stuff you can do with crochet! And with other crafts!
Honestly, just thinking about it is tempting me to write about Sandry from Tamora Pierce's Winding Circle books meeting a magic crocheter, or Astrid from How To Train Your Dragon secretly being a really fantastic naalbinder, etc.
Much of the time, when someone hears that I'm working on a sweater, a jacket, or even a tank top or short sleeved sweater, they think it's the strangest thing that I'm making something to wear and not an afghan. Even shawls, which always seems weird to me because I grew up with a mother who crocheted shawls all the time. The first time I saw a knitted shawl, I thought "That's the strangest thing."
Dragons and ancient needle arts! Sounds good to me.
