Looking for Patterns

My Google-fu is starting to fail me, so I thought I'd turn to you lovely people.

I'm looking for free patterns for not just blankets and scarves but clothing items and hats made from squares or other make-a-whole-bunch shapes.

Have you looked at Ravelry? There are a lot of free patterns there. Also LionBrand.com. Both require free memberships, but they are worth it, IMNSHO.

I've got both of those, but I'm looking for free patterns and the more sophisticated ones cost money. I'm all pro-capitalist, but I'm also broke. :P

As am I. I love the ability on both sites to not only search for just crochet, but also for only free patterns. :)

There is also CrochetMe, which also has lots of free stuff, but I'm sure you've heard of that, too.

I'd definitely go to Ravelry and do a pattern search using "availability: free", "craft: crochet", and "attributes: construction techniques: motif". Maybe "attributes: construction techniques: motif OR modular/join as you go" but that would pick up things that aren't really a bunch of separate pieces.

You could also limit it to specific categories like "category: clothing" to exclude blankets and other home decor items.

I got 735 hits for motifs, crochet, and free (all categories so lots of blankets) and when I limited it to clothing I got 63 (a couple mis-tagged patterns in there but not many). Is Ravelry having search issues again?

Either that or they aren't discounting the search I was doing before. I'll try again.

The last time I had search issues it was claiming there were no knit cardigan patterns on Ravelry. Generally it clears up in a hour or so. I think it just gets weird when Casey is working on something.

Have you tried searching with the term "granny squares" + item of clothing? It's bringing me up a fair number of free patterns for hats and sweaters, and even if you don't like that particular method of doing squares, the patterns should be adaptable.

Good idea, though I'm just looking for clothing in general now. Guess I'll just go down the list.
